Sun Graves

Written by Silvie Mietzekatze

Getting older sucks. Hangovers now last for days and the thoughts about starting a retirement fund instead of spending every last, hard-earned dollar on concerts and records becomes more frequent. But the true evil of aging for me is preventing myself from becoming a music grouch, the equivalent to the old man on the porch. A music grouch has seen it all, heard it all and every new bit of music is ignored by the simple words, “ I hate new bands.” They will lecture you on how things were better in the old days and everything just sounds like it is recycled from the past. It is so tempting after years of listening to music to fall into the pit of music grouchiness. There is only one remedy; get your head out of your ass and listen to new music. You will be surprised what you might find. A good example is the SUN GRAVES from LOS ANGELES. A really exciting new band that mixes folk, country and sixties together – and in the end doesn’t sound like just another band. This “western alternative rock” quintet that is influenced by bands like, Black Rebel, Motorcycle Club, Nirvana, Radiohead, Robert Johnson, Hank Williams, Bob Dylan, Deftones and even hip hop let their different love for these musicians flow into their music. The end result makes you turn up that Bluetooth speaker and provoke your neighbors just a little bit. The SUN GRAVES were so kind to share two songs of their upcoming, full length, debut album that is to be released in November. I really enjoyed the rawness mixed with country western guitars and their singer’s growling voice. Speaking of growling – they do remind me of the Growlers a little bit and I have a feeling that they might just become as popular. A few songs were already picked up for the independent film “SCRAMBLE” directed by Noah Scott. That and a music video is coming out at the end of the year. Make sure not to become a music grouch and give this band a good listen and a like and check out their Instagram & Facebook page for upcoming shows!
